So yeah, I'm 48, and saw Lawnmower Man at the cinema I worked at (yes, free movies lol), and I thought it sucked ass. The effects were awful for a film, but would have been fine if it were a video game of that era.

Love the channel guys, have been binging all the episodes! Would you guys be able to react to video game cinematics? If so it would be awesome to see you react to the witcher 3 "A night to remember" cinematic.

The more and more of these videos you guys do the less and less actual VFX reacting there is and its instead filled with constant plugs and reused "how-to's".

You should do a series where you take bad CGI and make it good then take good CGI and make it bad, I would love that

10:56 i just noticed the car they were driving was a Fiat Multipla. It's a very large and wide car that has 6 Seats. This also made possible a lot of the camera movements inside of It. My dad owns a Fiat Multipla and i can Say that if you lane down from the right Seat you have to strech your arm ti get to the left door , Just to give you an idea of how large that car is

I saw it in the theater when it came out. It was the first film to introduce virtual reality, total immersion, cybersex, singularity and the concept of Moore's law having ethical consequences. Lawnmower man is an historical metaphor for the consequences of acquiring sudden disproportionate power over the computing world and it foreshadows everything from Isis to Gamergate. When I first saw the movie, I was a little bummed about how few actual CGI scenes there were. I especially wanted to see more morphing sex play, but the tool was in its infancy. Yes, it came out a year after T2, but it was the first film to feature CGI as a Mcguffin, and not just a production tool since TRON.

Oh, i was alive when Lawnmower man came out. Remember it as a good movie, destroyed by those ugly 3D effects. They were actually concidered as really ugly... I mean, we already had the good ones back then. Alien, Bttf, Star Wars trilogy and lots of other cool stuff. Remember these scenes as visualizations of a virus like guy inside a SW network... like in TRON... So I guess since those effects represent the graphic look of that era, I suppose this should be how it actually would look. Although, it was really ugly and it was criticised for it.

Born in early 80s, and Lawnmower Man was one of my favorite movies as a kid. It's hard for me to pinpoint my true feelings from that long ago, but I'd say maybe the VFX worked for me because it wasn't really trying to integrate the (now) goofy looking CGI into the real world-it was playing into the idea of "what if computer games were like this in the near-future..." and it was just COOL. It made me want to have super awesome VR *right now* (back then). Looking back at this movie, it's really neat to still be alive and see VR evolving (rift->vive->index->????) into more than I ever imagined back in the day. But yeah-it was kind of a dumb movie, and it didn't age well, but it really struck a chord with me I guess.

I watched Lawnmower man as a kid and I remember being really scared by it. The guy looks doofy now but when I was younger it fit the context, and it was a pretty uncanny valley-esque terrifying evil guy. It didn't matter he looked weird or not real, since its all in VR and its his avatar now anyway, it was never really supposed to simulate real life-- it was meant to be otherwordly and scary looking.

I watched the lawnmower man around 1994 at the age of 5, and all I can remember are the scenes inside the "game" (in my mind it was a videogame), and that virtual face was by far the most scary thing I've ever seen at that time. Seriously, that dude haunted me for years. Thank you for bringing that memory back, by the way.

I was about ten when Lawnmower Man came out and at the time it seemed very cool to me. Probably because before there was no CGI in movies and it seemed so new and different.

The thing with Lion King 2019 is that it's not live action, it just claims to be. It's all CGI so they had the tools and options to actually give their characters personality and emotion, and decided against it. In a musical, with singing animals. The film may look great on a visual level but it's lacking so much in other areas because they wanted to be as real as possible, and I really don't get it how as a director of such a film you deliberately choose to take out all the emotions.

I didn't get to see Lawnmower Man in the cinema but we got it on video as soon as we could. it was pretty amazing for the time. we were completely enthralled by it from the first trailer. being into videogames, to see this looking so advanced compared to the games of the time, was mind blowing. There was so much CGI in this movie, compared to others of the time. the CGI shots were used sparingly in other movies but this was completely in your face. There was literally no shying away from it. it was computer graphics and it wasn't trying to be anything else. It had to be on the nose. It was a phenomenon and all the kids at school talked about it for a long time.

I'm in animation and saw Lawnmower Man when it came out and thought, even at the time, that the animation looked rough and over-exaggerated but not augmented in terms of acting. It was 2 years before Reboot, though, and as we know, a lot of things happened during that time in terms of development, tools and expectations.

REAL lions emote way more than the ones in this frickin' terrible movie, and I don't believe viewers watching wouldn't empathise with them if they didn't express more with their eyebrows, ears and body language. People love animals and they care about them - Heck, I've cried from watching cheetah cubs die in nature documentaries! So, don't me nobody cares about animals!

i was born in 78, and saw lawnmower man in theaters after I saw T2. My dudes, it was one of the few movies I actually walked out on. The story was stupid and I was into tech stuff enough that I knew how much of it was total bull! The effects being janky as hell was the least of the reasons I didnt like the movie.

Yeah guys, I was alive and right in the target demo for The Lawnmower Man. It was definitely marketed as being a huge breakthrough in CGI, and as I recall it mostly felt like it delivered. Yes, movies like Jurassic Park and T2 had used CGI, but it was always for elements. The exciting thing about Lawnmower Man was how extensive the use of CGI was. I think this was also an era when people thought VR was going to be like what you're seeing on screen. I recall being disappointed by the movie, but mainly by the story and not the effects. If I remember right, my disappointment with the effects was not how they were executed but what they chose to show. BTW you guys didn't use the VR/CGI sex scene? Because THAT was really something.
