MAKING A DAMASCUS RING!!! Part 2

Hey guys, sadly I had to cancel the auction - you can read more about why here: **Auction Cancelled** I found out from commenters on Instagram that a certain proportion of people can get reactions from the nickel content of one of the steels used after prolonged contact between the fingers either side of the ring. Naturally this poses a liability concern if I sell it. Who knows, maybe I’ll turn it into a not-a-ring and sell it then! I’m sorry to let down those of you bidding and excited to win the ring. Nevertheless it was a hugely fun project that I got to practice and learn a lot on! (I’m now itching to see the comments this prompts under the Mokume Gane [copper and nickel] Pendant video I just finished recording and will soon publish 😂)

I must agree with the general consensus here that the gem setting looks out of place on the ring. However, a possible solution would be to add many more gems!

Alec, you may want to look into a bezel setting tool. They are cheap and you could have used one to set the silver inside your ring easily. You would probably not have any problems making one. All gemstones that are cut "en cabochon", or round top, are bezel set.

That was a very fun and interesting project after all the weapons you made. Those are fun and contain exciting craftsmanship for sure but this is another cup of tea and have more novelty, to me at least. I've got a crazy idea, not even sure if it is possible, but here's the deal: make two narrow damaskus rings and set them on a silve liner so that you have two damascus bands divided by a silver line in the middle. How you would go about making that happen is something I am very curious about!

You can buy nickel jewelry all day long at Walmart. List the metals that the ring is made of in your auction. If people know what's in there, you won't a problem. You can sell the ring. Sell the ring Alec.

The way you attached the silver band looks really awesome, but just out of curiosity, would it have been possible to braze it on? Kinda like lug brazing on steel bike frames? Capillary action sucks the filler into the gap between the iron and the silver. I guess it'd have implications for your tempering, just because of the added heat through brazing

If you use a nickel manganese alloy rather than a high carbon nickel alloy you won't have the problem with nickel allergy. Even people without the allergy will develop it overtime if you don't use the nickel manganese alloy. Good for knives bad for jewelry.

Steel rings sketch me out. If they get crushed onto your finger it's a lot harder to cut through steel than other jewelry metals. If I absolutely had to wear one I would get it as soft as possible or as hard as possible so it would either be easier to cut or just shatter rather than bend.
