I'm sorry Conor but this was not good: it's pretty much everything you might advise against doing and then you do it. And even the advice is highly questionable. Even if you make a good start (which you don't), it is then necessary to have some good ongoing content. You don't. And , no, I don't want to pause and listen for 30 seconds in your "powerful" pause - I'm already disengaged. The only reason I comment is that this keeps &&&****ing coming up in my feed and so eventually I gave in and watched. I hope it now disappears. You lost my interest within 20 seconds - no exaggeration. Sorry, but true.

No calculator needed. This guy is full of crap. 4:38 When you speak, have a mastery of the language you choose. A "fact" is "a thing that is known or proved to be true." So the term "True fact" is redundant. There is no such thing as a "false fact". That's a fact. In fact, it's a fact every that elementary school student should know. Plus this guy is borrrrrrrring.

"There are more people alive today than have ever died"- this gob daw "There are currently seven billion people alive today and the Population Reference Bureau estimates that about 107 billion people have ever lived." - BBC.co.uk ...so the way to start a speech is to lie? I can't subscribe to that. That's the Donald Trump playbook of speaches. No thanks, from a fellow Irish man

I've watched this video because with my fellow worker because we're preparing an architecture project presentation. Indeed it will take place in front of a jury composed by eminent architects so we must catch their attention. My mate also wrote a these in psychologie in addition of his master in architecture, he's probably the most farsighted man i've ever met. I say that because he told me something i agree with: this conference starts to be interesting when the Ted speaker explains he met a public speaker expert who said him that people want to hear stories wich start with other people. In fact he's applicating the advice by saying this anecdote. But there's an even more interesting thing here... Who say that this public speaker expert is real ? My psychologist friend told me that he could have created the character to use a catch trick and moreover to give him credibility through the intellectual authority embodied by the fictive expert.

Problem is that if you attend a conference and virtually everybody follows such an advice it'll get boring as h3ll. You need a broad variety of presenting skills. By the way, if that guy really teaches how to give a speech he should cut out constantly touching his face, in the first place. That's really a sign of insecure behavior.

I once met the sales director of a very large carpet and furniture retailing multiple in the UK. He told me how he got all his sales teams across the country to distinguish and isolate real customers from those just browsing. It was so simple and yet so successful. He would ask every new customer when they walked in, with a smile on his face, 'what room would you like to carpet today?' If they are there to buy you get a direct and positive answer, 'oh we want to renew the lounge carpet' or whatever. At that point you are in and can lead them very quickly through the choices and get a sale. If they don't want to buy you politely leave them to browse.

People do like stories. All they have to be is loosely coherent. But good speeches cannot be formulaic. Vary your pitch and speed of delivery and loudness at places that make sense. Use pauses effectively. Know your speech. Practice, practice, practice. And relax. Breathe. Make eye contact. Ultimately, you need to work at it by doing it and allowing yourself to be seen at varying degrees of competence, the same way rock bands, actors and other performers do. Get past the fear of humiliation. More practice, practice, practice.
