What the heck did he tell you!!? He goes on to say how story telling is important but is that what the expert told him or is the expert advice story just an example of story telling? I have a speaking rule for you. Don't set up a mystery and then never get back to answering it. Someone also told me something so profound it changed my life. It was something so simple and obvious but always overlooked. It was something you probably encounter daily but never give a second thought. It............

Did anyone else google "are their more living people than dead people?" I knew that couldn't be a fact, and turns out, its not a fact. By a long shot lol He is another "Irish Conor" that just says shit "More living people than dead, and i can beat Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match" 😂😂😂😂 .. However i do appreciate the advice, just having a laugh.

The "more people alive than has ever died" factoid is wrong, very wrong. According to a scientificamerican article that references the original research, approximately 106 billion people have ever lived.

If his advice is no better than this facts. this is of dubious value. Example: at 3:20 he talks about using a factoid, and says "...there are more people are alive today than have ever died." Actually, there are only seven billion alive today, but 107 billion are estimated to have lived throughout the past five millennia. Total world population surpassed half a billion in the 15th Century and most of those folks have now passed on. www.livescience.com/18336-human-population-dead-living-infographic.html

If you're going to wow the audience with a fact - try to make sure it is actually factual! The oft-repeated "more people alive than have ever died" is wrong - and it's not even just a little bit wrong - it's wrong by at least 100 billion people.

I just watched your how to start a speech video. The practicing aspect stood out for me. I did my first radio show on August 3rd 2010. It was a once monthly program broadcast on AM 1510 in Boston. After the show I listened to the tape. It was full of "ums". I was determined to grow as a broadcaster. So, I found a podcasting site that gave me the opportunity to broadcast my interviews one hour per day every day at no cost. I scheduled interviews five days per week, and with every one I improved a little more. I can't listen to those old interviews as it's a bit painful, but without them I wouldn't have achieved my goal of being a professional broadcaster. I still do a few interviews today, but at the height of my career I was a drive time on air personality on an FM station in Northern Palm Beach county. If you are passionate about what you do or what you'd like to do and would like to improve, do it frequently.

Great story... deliberate practice is the path to mastery. If someone asks me how they can get paid for speaking, I tell them to give 100 talks for free and then come back to me. It’s the only way to get ready. There’s a us comedian who says “the worst thing is exposure before experience”

I was once scheduled to give a seminar at a major conference on aviation in Texas at 4 p.m. on the last day. OMG I was bummed. But, I calmed down after a drink or four and reverse engineered the situation. First was audience participation that would be fun but as Conor said, "factual". So I put together a Power Point that began with the old MMA mantra of "Are YOU ready to rummmmmbbbbbblllllleeeee!" and off we go on a 60's, 70's, early 80's factual backed by music history tour of aviation based off of the show "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader". Capture the target audience and allow them to participate to learn. Not a single person left the room; I was watching carefully the whole time. I also put together a panel of experts who were prepped on this show and they bought in hook, line, and sinker as well. Never hurts to have quality bullpen help ready to get in there an pitch! This guy damn sure knows what he is talking about and I love this video.

www.scientificamerican.com/article/fact-or-fiction-living-outnumber-dead/ : the living will never outnumber the dead. I'd say provocative facts are good, but you can really look like a kid talking about how giraffes grew a long neck on purpose because evolution (i.e.; not how it works)

Notice he doesn't start telling you what is going to talk about in his talk. He asked a simple question… What is the best way to start a speech in the best way to end his speech ? Then he pauses. that is one of his techniques. He also uses his own technique of relating to the audience by talking about their kids and giraffe speeches. or his frustration with bad speakers, just like they have. You can learn more by watching his speech than listening to what he says. And he smiles a lot and talks with his hands, 2 business no no's. But it works for him. So listen to his talking take notes then go back and really watch it . How he introduces topics about speaking. Etc. He wants you to like him. This suit is not properly pressed, is ill fitting, same with his shirt and tie. He doesn't want to be pretentious.
